Shadow theater is an ancient and original form of performance that has been preserved since time immemorial. Among the Armenians, the tradition of shadow theater likely originated in the ancient period, as indicated by the narratives referencing stories from the pre-Christian era. Initially rooted in ritualistic contexts, it evolved into an integral component of significant ceremonies and celebrations. However, the emergence of new theatrical forms and the subsequent rise of television led to the gradual decline of shadow theater.

Recognizing the importance of preserving this fading art form, the "Ayrudzi" expedition group, known for showcasing equestrian games, national songs, and dances since 1983, took a keen interest in the vanishing shadow theater. Incorporating it into their riding tours, the expedition's members diligently safeguard the fragmented heritage passed down from ancestors while contributing to its ongoing development. Subsequently, the "Ayrogi" shadow theater group emerged within the "Ayrudzi" expedition, dedicated to preserving and promoting this traditional theater through performances.

Starting 2015, In collaboration with the "Folk Arts Hub" Foundation, the group stages monthly shadow theater performances at the "Silk Road" hotel. Since 2019, the "Irog" shadow theater group has theatered a pivotal role in forming new groups across different regions of Armenia, fostering the continuation of this cultural tradition among individuals of various ages.

In a significant milestone, the inaugural National Shadow Festival took place in Armenia in 2021 under the auspices of the "Folk Arts Hub" Foundation. The event showcased performances by newly formed groups over the past decade. Encouraged by the success of the festival, subsequent editions in 2022 and 2023 featured participation not only from Armenian shadow theater groups but also from Russia.

Through unwavering dedication and collaborative efforts between the Foundation and the “Ayrogi” group, the once-forgotten traditions of shadow theater are gradually experiencing a revival. Despite the challenges, these endeavors are making steady progress, captivating and inspiring new generations with the rich cultural heritage of shadow theater.
